LGG alleviates atopic eczema
|
The LGG lactic acid bacteria that Valio puts into its Gefilus products can alleviate as well as prevent the onset of eczema in infants, according to a report published recently in a leading medical journal (May 2005).

A study of 230 infants with atopic eczema and suspected cow's milk allergy has been conducted at the University of Helsinki. Some of the children were given LGG lactic acid bacteria with their food for four weeks, while others received LGG combined with three other probiotic bacteria, or received a placebo. All the children were placed on a milk-free diet and had appropriate skin treatment.
The babies getting LGG in a milk-free diet made a greater improvement than those in the control groups, the study concluded, in cases where the allergy was IgE-sensitised i.e. where the allergen causes the formation of antibodies. IgE-sensitised allergic reactions often appear immediately after eating. The eczema was alleviated significantly in the infants getting just LGG - not in those receiving the combination.

LGG also reduces the risk of atopy
Research published by the University of Turku in 2001 studied the effect of LGG on the onset of atopic eczema in infants by the age of two.
When pregnant women and, post natal, the babies or breast-feeding mothers were given LGG for six months, the occurrence of atopic eczema in the children by the age of two was less than half that of those who had received the placebo.
LGG works by restraining the immune system if it reacts too intensely or incorrectly. In healthy infants LGG enhances the preparedness of the immune system and improves the body's natural resistance, reducing the risk of infection.
LGG or Lactobacillus GG is the world's most researched probiotic lactic acid bacterium, and it is used in Valio's Gefilus products. Valio has also licensed it around the world, so products containing LGG are available in some 40 countries.
