A healthy cow produces high quality milk
|
To maintain their well-being even healthy milking cows need a suitable environment, the right kind of feed, and to be able to live in the way that’s typical to their species.
Valio’s nationwide theme for 2012 is grazing. Successful grazing in its variety of forms is often financially profitable, improves cows’ well-being, creates a positive image for milk production, and supports dairy product sales.
Valio Farm Services replaced the T101 test for antibiotic residue in milk with Delvotest at the turn of the year 2011–2012. Training in udder health continued.
In 2011, Valio Farm Services participated in the “Katse vasikkaan” (focusing on calves) theme year and has now prepared for the 2012 grazing theme by conducting a survey on pasture.

| Valio quality endorsement is a sure sign of quality |
Valio dairy farms employ a Quality Manual that provides instructions for the different aspects of milk production. 96% of the farms have signed a quality agreement with a Valio procurement co-operative.
At least 5% of the farms are audited annually and a total of 523 audits was conducted in 2011, which accounts for 6.2%.
24% of Valio Group dairy farms have been granted the Valio dairy farm endorsement, which requires that the farm has complemented the Quality Manual with its own guidelines and meets the necessary requirements in terms of milk quality, animal feeding and care, the quality of the environment, and production follow-up.
A few dozen new endorsements are granted every year.

 Happy cows
Dairy cows are valuable animals that deserve the very best of care. Healthy cows rarely contract diseases and produce high quality milk.
Valio dairy cows are the healthiest in the EU, and almost 94% of the milk taken in by Valio is in the highest quality category.
Valio experts help the milk producers promote cow well-being. Dairy farmers receive advice e.g. on building barns, producing good silage, and on cow health care.
