Lactose intolerance is a worldwide phenomenon

Adult humans are in essence lactose intolerant. The majority lose the ability to degrade lactose after childhood so adult tolerance is in fact an anomaly. Yet a large part of the world’s population can and does drink milk thanks to a genotype mutation.
Researchers believe this mutation has become common due to the widespread and longstanding practice of cattle farming and the significant nutritional benefits milk brings to the human diet from infancy onwards.

Although the role of milk varies considerably from culture to culture, and in some is not commonly drunk, the majority of the world population is lactose intolerant, so lactose free technology offers consumers taste and health, and our licensees and other stakeholders significant business potential.

Dairy products are an established and essential part of the human diet around the world, and are increasingly popular in new markets such as Asia. However, many people suffer from lactose intolerance, an inherited characteristic, making them unable to consume milk-based products. Lactose accounts for about 5% of whole milk, it is found in most fresh dairy products and is too much for people with lactase enzyme deficiencies to tolerate.

Normally, the lactase enzyme hydrolyses lactose into galactose and glucose in the small intestine. However, lactose intolerant people do not have sufficient amounts of this enzyme to digest lactose properly and they can suffer unpleasant intestinal problems because of this.

Fresh milk contains almost 5% lactose, which is too much for people with lactase enzyme deficiencies to tolerate.

After removal of lactose with Valio's patented technology, the resulting milk drink contains less than 0.01% lactose. It still has the same taste and nutritional content as the original milk and is suitable for even the most sensitive lactose intolerant people.
