Safe from farm to table

Valio has pioneered technical innovations for commitment to food safety, and guarantees clean and traceable raw materials, a certified hygienic production environment, and maintains a consistent quality chain delivering untainted products.
Valio's outstanding achievement in food safety is its management of the whole quality chain and unbroken cold chain from farm to table. The product quality chain stays in our own hands from farm to shop.

Valio dairy farmers produce the essential raw material, arguably the EU's cleanest milk. Animal disease control is critical to the quality chain and Finnish dairy cows are exceptionally healthy. Milk producers have the greatest impact on a significant part of the quality chain.

Valio can trace the raw milk used in our products back to the route taken by a single milk collection lorry right back to the farms. Traceability is achieved by documenting all events in the production chain. Samples are taken at different stages of the process and the results are recorded by batch. This is how we can be certain at any time which product the milk from a single farm has gone into.

Food safety is an essential factor in Valio's operations. Risk based food safety management system and in-house control are implemented throughout the company's activities. We regularly check that Valio’s in-house control instructions are up to date and reflect all process changes and legislative amendments.
Applying systems, standards and principles
As well as being ISO 9001 and 14001 certified, Valio has implemented ISO 22000 principles. More recently, and of particular interest to European customers, four of our plants have received the BRC (British Retail Consortium) certificate.

Our adherence to HACCP principles throughout Valio operations ensures a high standard of food safety. Valio conducts continuous risk assessment enabling rigorous risk management. Food safety risk management is based on continuous monitoring of critical control points, process line management and clean production environment. To achieve this we apply the most modern methods in product and environmental monitoring including PCR technology.

Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) is included in the ISO 22000 operational prerequisite program that handles e.g. hygienic production standards, a highly significant aspect of Valio’s quality systems. Packaging and the like are also considered as raw material inputs and are part of the ISO 22000 remit. All raw materials are included in the quality chain and just like raw milk are traceable right back to their origin. Valio’s food safety network comprises people in purchasing, production, and quality control.
