Valio Gefilus® - Valio's feel good factor
|
Lactobacillus GG, an L. rhamnosus strain (ATCC 53103) first identified in 1985, is one of the first bacterium proven to survive in and colonise the human gastrointestinal tract. The ability of Lactobacillus GG to colonise the GI tract means protection against GI infections and imbalances in the body. While this colonisation is not permanent, LGG®'s presence in the GI is reinforced through continued administration of foods containing the bacterium.

Realising the importance and potential of LGG®, Valio acquired a worldwide exclusive license in 1987. This was followed by pioneering research on the bacterium at Valio's dedicated R&D centre as well as at universities in Finland and abroad, resulting in the launch of Valio's first LGG® products in 1990.
Today the company offers a wide range of LGG® products including buttermilks, yoghurts, milk, fruit drinks, "daily dose" drinks and fermented whey-based drinks - all sold under the Gefilus® brand name in Finland. Since 2006 Gefilus products targeted especially for children have been sold under the Valio Kidius® Gefilus® brand. Valio also exports LGG® products to Russia and Sweden under the Gefilus® brand name, produces milk-based Gefilus® products in Estonia and exports Gefilus® juices to the Baltic States.
Valio grants LGG rights to other companies under sub-licence agreements.
